Man Taken Into Custody Following Standoff in Barboursville

Police took a man into custody after a standoff that lasted several hours Saturday night in Barboursville.

Barboursville officers said they tried to pull over a vehicle driven by Daniel Totten, 39, for a traffic violation, but he fled and led them on a short pursuit. Totten later got out of the vehicle and went into a home in the 900 block of Main Street, which sparked the standoff, according to the Barboursville Police Department.

Authorities established a perimeter around the residence, but officers said Totten refused to surrender. Police obtained search warrants and, after roughly two hours, deployed tear gas to force him out of the home.

Officers then took Totten into custody without further incident. He faces charges of misdemeanor obstruction, felony fleeing with reckless indifference and expired registration.

The Cabell County Sheriff’s Office and the West Virginia State Police assisted at the scene.
