A winter storm is closing in on northern Michigan, and parts of the western Upper Peninsula could see nearly 2 feet of snow — or even more — by Friday, Nov. 28, according to the National Weather Service.
Winter storm warnings and advisories are active and moving east across the UP and northern Lower Peninsula.
Most of Michigan’s snowfall will pile up in the UP, especially in the west, including the Keweenaw Peninsula, where totals could reach 23 inches by Nov. 28, the NWS said. The Ironwood area may see the heaviest snowfall, with estimates topping 37 inches and possibly climbing to 48 inches by Friday, according to the NWS.
Southeast of L’Anse, in the Mount Arvon and Craig Lake State Park region, snowfall could climb to nearly 40 inches.
Most of southern and mid-Michigan will see lighter snow — under 5 inches — while northern Michigan is on track for heavier totals. Gaylord could get up to 9 inches, with the potential to reach 19 inches by the morning of Nov. 28, according to the weather agency.
A broad stretch of Michigan spanning Gaylord, Traverse City, Cadillac and Charlevoix is expected to receive 16–17 inches of snow.
