Michigan City residents can now ride public transit for free. The Michigan City Zero-Fare Transit System began offering fare-free rides on Dec. 1, city officials announced.
The Michigan City Board of Public Works & Safety approved the policy on Nov. 17, eliminating all passenger fares.
Transit Director Robin Barzoni-Tillman said the initiative reflects Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch’s vision to increase mobility, remove barriers for low-income and transit-dependent riders, and expand economic and community access. “Public transit is essential infrastructure,” Barzoni-Tillman said. “Removing fares ensures every member of the community can travel freely, safely, and affordably.”
City officials added that eliminating fares will improve service efficiency, reduce boarding times, and enhance the overall rider experience.
