Michigan Man Accused of Killing Fiancée and Two Teens Found Competent for Trial

A man charged in a triple homicide case in Grand Rapids has been declared mentally fit to stand trial, clearing the way for court proceedings to move forward.

Court Rules Suspect Competent to Face Charges

Authorities confirmed that Charles Lee Broomfield Jr.., 45, has been deemed competent following a psychological evaluation. The decision was announced during a hearing on March 24 in district court.

Broomfield is facing three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his fiancée, Jacqueline Neill, and her two sons, Michael and Cameron Kilpatrick.

Fatal Shooting Inside Family Home

Investigators allege that the victims were shot and killed on January 27 inside their residence, just weeks after moving into the home. The teenage boys were 13 and 15 years old.

Initial 911 Call Raised Suspicion

After the incident, Broomfield reportedly called emergency services, claiming that armed intruders had entered the home and carried out the attack. However, police quickly identified inconsistencies in his account.

Authorities noted there were no footprints in the snow that would indicate outside intruders. Additionally, Broomfield claimed a suspect had taken his firearm from an unlocked box, but officers later found the gun box locked and placed outside the home.

Confession and Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Police say Broomfield later admitted to the killings. Following his arrest, his defense attorney requested a competency evaluation in February.

With the court now confirming he is fit to stand trial, the case will proceed to a preliminary examination scheduled for March 31. The hearing will determine whether sufficient evidence exists to move forward with a full trial.

Suspect Remains in Custody

Broomfield is currently being held without bond at the Kent County Jail as the legal process continues.
