Michigan man charged after abandoning seven puppies in freezing conditions

A man in Bridgeport Township is facing criminal charges after authorities say he abandoned a group of puppies outdoors during winter weather.

Prosecutors allege that Dylan J. Howey, 31, left seven puppies in a plastic container on a private property along Baker Road on Jan. 6.

Puppies left in tote in snowy conditions

According to investigators, the animals were placed inside a plastic tote along with a sealed bag of dog food before being left in the snow several miles from the suspect’s home.

Authorities said the puppies were discovered by a delivery driver, who contacted police after finding them on the property.

All animals survived

Officials noted that all seven puppies survived the incident, but said they likely would not have lived through the cold temperatures without timely intervention.

The animals were later taken in by Saginaw County Animal Care & Control.

Suspect identified and charged

Investigators identified Howey as a suspect and said he admitted to abandoning the animals during questioning.

He has been charged with abandonment or cruelty involving four to 10 animals, a felony that carries potential penalties of up to two years in prison, fines and community service.

Court proceedings underway

Howey appeared before M. Randall Jurrens, who set bond at $7,500 cash-surety or 10%.

As part of his release conditions, Howey is prohibited from acquiring new animals, though he may keep the pets he already owns.

A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for March 25 as the case moves forward.
