A Lake County Sheriff’s Office pursuit ended in a serious crash near 9th Avenue and Ralston Street in Gary when the fleeing suspect’s vehicle collided head-on with a sheriff’s squad car, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.
Multiple medics and fire crews responded to the scene for extrication. A female passenger in the suspect’s vehicle was removed at 6:33 p.m. and transported for medical treatment.
The deputy involved was bleeding at the scene and was transported by squad car for treatment. Sheriff Martinez confirmed the officer is alert and conscious.
The suspect, who was driving the fleeing vehicle, is in custody. Martinez said he will provide updates on the officer’s condition as more information becomes available.
