Ohio fugitive accused of stealing $700,000 arrested in Miami after nearly 18 years

An Ohio fugitive who evaded authorities for almost two decades was arrested Monday in Miami by a U.S. Marshals task force.

Craig Scanlon, 68, was convicted in federal court in 2001 on charges including mail fraud, money laundering, and transporting stolen property across state lines. Authorities say he embezzled nearly $700,000 from clients.

Scanlon served 46 months in prison and was sentenced to three years of supervised release. In 2007, while under supervision, he fled and remained at large for years, investigators said.

Authorities pursued leads in Ohio, Florida, and Texas before members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force recently identified Scanlon living and working in Miami Beach.

Investigators found him working as a personal trainer and hotel manager in the 6500 block of Collins Avenue. Officials stated that he was also residing at the hotel under the alias August Brooke before disclosing his true identity.

“Incredible work by investigators in Ohio and Florida led to the capture of a fugitive who believed he could disappear under a false name,” said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott. “The Marshals Service will continue to pursue fugitives no matter how long they run.”
