Pontiac Man Arrested Hours After Fatal Shooting in Oakland County

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — A 36-year-old man from Pontiac was arrested just hours after allegedly shooting and killing another man in what authorities believe was a robbery-related incident.

Victim Found Shot in Driveway

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 2:15 p.m. on April 11 to the 100 block of Crystal Lake Drive following reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 28-year-old Kevonte Javon Smith lying in a driveway with a gunshot wound to the back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suspect Captured Within Three Hours

Investigators say the suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting. A coordinated search involving:

  • K-9 units
  • Police drones

helped authorities locate and arrest the suspect about three hours later on Spokane Drive in Pontiac.

Evidence Recovered by Detectives

Police confirmed that:

  • The weapon used in the shooting was recovered
  • The suspect’s clothing was also found

Detectives believe the suspect and victim were known to each other, suggesting the incident was not random.

Charges Expected Soon

The case is expected to be presented to prosecutors in the coming days for formal charges.

“This is a tragic and senseless loss of life,” said Michael Bouchard. “We are committed to ensuring the suspect is held fully accountable.”
