A registered sex offender is facing charges after prosecutors say he sexually assaulted a woman in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood last month.
Arthur White, 40, is accused of attacking a 29-year-old woman on Jan. 12 in an alley in the 1400 block of North Lawndale Avenue.
According to prosecutors, the woman had just gotten off a bus and was walking home when White approached her and asked if she needed assistance. After she declined and continued walking, White allegedly disappeared briefly before reappearing moments later, grabbing her and pulling her into a nearby alley, where authorities say he sexually assaulted her.
After the attack, White fled the scene. The woman called 911 and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.
Prosecutors said the assault was captured on surveillance video, consistent with the victim’s account. While in custody, White was shown the footage and allegedly covered his head with his jacket.
During the investigation, detectives learned White had been arrested a week earlier in connection with a separate incident at a Subway restaurant, where he is accused of groping a woman after she declined to speak with him. Authorities said the woman pulled out a pocket knife and warned him not to touch her again.
Prosecutors also detailed White’s criminal history. When he was 15, he sexually assaulted a 5-year-old relative while she was sleeping and later received a six-year sentence. He is required to register as a sex offender and has since been convicted multiple times for failing to comply with registration requirements. His record also includes convictions for drug offenses, retail theft and probation violations.
A judge ordered White held without bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 24.
