State school board eases takeover of Logan County Schools

The West Virginia Board of Education is restoring some authority to Logan County Schools after assuming control in October 2022.

The decision follows a six-month progress report from Dr. Sonya White, who was appointed Logan County superintendent in 2025. Her update highlighted improvements across the school system.

According to a news release from the West Virginia Board of Education, the central office has been reorganized, leadership teams are continuing to form, and communication with the local board remains a priority.

In light of the progress, the WVBE voted to return policy-making authority to the Logan County Board of Education. However, the state board will continue overseeing other aspects of county operations.

The state board originally approved the takeover after reviewing findings from a state investigation that revealed troubling allegations, including a toxic work environment, misuse of funds, failure to support vulnerable students, and issues with virtual learning throughout the district.

Multiple complaints from Logan County teachers and administrators triggered the state’s review.

The West Virginia Board of Education then assumed control over the day-to-day management of the county school system and board operations.

This marks the second time Logan County Schools has fallen under state control. The first takeover began in 1992 and ended in 1996.
