Two Arrested, 3,500 Pounds of Stolen Telecommunications Wire Found in Mingo County

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — A months-long investigation into stolen telecommunications wire in Mingo County led to two arrests Thursday, authorities said.

According to the Mingo County Sheriff’s Office, Joseph Maynard and Tara Dempsey were arrested for attempting to deliver stolen property.

Deputies and troopers executed a search at Big Frank’s Salvage Yard in Williamson, where they seized approximately 3,500 pounds of illegally obtained wire and more than $10,000 in cash.

During the search, authorities said a truck loaded with copper wire attempted to enter the property. A traffic stop was conducted, resulting in the two arrests.

Investigators said multiple sources led them to the salvage yard, and on several occasions an undercover operative was able to exchange stolen wire for cash.

Officials noted that additional charges could be filed as the investigation remains active.
