Violent crash involving Broward Sheriff’s Office cruiser reported in Fort Lauderdale

A serious crash involving a Broward Sheriff’s Office cruiser occurred overnight in Fort Lauderdale.

Video from the scene showed two tow trucks positioned near Northwest 31st Avenue and Prospect Road, close to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

One tow truck hauled away a pickup truck, while the other removed the damaged Broward Sheriff’s Office cruiser.

Witnesses told CBS News Miami that the collision may have happened during a high-speed chase through the intersection.

They said they heard a loud impact and saw the cruiser strike the pickup truck while pursuing another vehicle.

A few miles east of the initial crash site, another wreck was reported. Witnesses believe that vehicle may have been the one involved in the chase with the Broward Sheriff’s Office cruiser.

“Basically, I was doing my work as a cashier helping out a customer. And he told me to look over to my right and look out the window,” witness Jared Fisher told CBS News Miami. “And we saw that there was a high-speed chase happening.”

Fisher said he watched a car speed through the intersection.

“Then the cop that was chasing him came by and collided with a car that was incoming onto the left side of the road,” he said.

He added that the crash produced a loud noise.

“Everyone stopped and about 30 cops came to the scene,” he said.

Authorities have closed off the crash site as the investigation continues, and officials have not said when the area will reopen.

It remains unclear whether anyone was injured.
