Woman identified after fatal incident involving Metro garbage truck in Louisville

The family of a woman who died following an incident involving a Metro garbage truck has identified her as 35-year-old Tyrah Adams.

According to Louisville Metro Police Department, officers were called around 9:04 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, to the area of 26th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard for a report of a person down. Police later said EMS arrived first and transported Adams to UofL Hospital for what initially appeared to be medical issues.

She was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators determined she had been injured after coming into contact with equipment on a garbage truck. Authorities have not released additional details about how the injury occurred.

Louisville Metro Public Works said its Solid Waste Management crew was conducting routine alley cleanup in the 2500 block of Cedar Street at the time of the incident. The department stated that employees involved have been placed on administrative leave in line with standard procedures while the investigation continues.

The department’s Public Integrity Unit is leading the case.

Stephanie Rivas, an attorney representing Adams’ family, said in a statement that the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear and described it as a difficult time for the family, asking for privacy as the investigation moves forward.

Neighbors in the area remembered Adams as a kind person.
