Wrong-way crash triggers semi-truck fire in Canton Township, nine injured

Nine people were hospitalized after a wrong-way crash involving a semi-truck sparked a fire in Canton Township on Wednesday afternoon.

Crash details

The collision occurred just before 1 p.m. on March 18 at the intersection of Ford and Haggerty roads near Interstate 275, according to police.

Authorities said a car traveling in the wrong direction in the northbound lanes crashed into a turning semi-truck. The impact caused fuel to spill and ignite, quickly setting the vehicles ablaze.

Rescue efforts and injuries

The fire trapped several occupants inside their vehicles, prompting a rapid response from officers at the scene.

Police said four officers helped pull victims from the burning vehicles but were injured during the rescue. In total:

  • Five civilians were injured

  • Four officers were injured

All nine individuals were transported to a hospital and are expected to recover.

Road closure and investigation

The intersection remained closed for several hours while emergency crews extinguished the fire and cleared debris. It reopened around 8:50 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
