Federal Officer Shoots Person in Leg After Shovel Attack in Minneapolis

A federal officer shot a person in the leg after being attacked with a shovel during an arrest in Minneapolis, sources told The Associated Press.

The incident follows reports acknowledged by the city of Minneapolis involving a shooting connected to federal law enforcement activity in North Minneapolis.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, a federal agent was attempting to arrest an undocumented immigrant during a routine traffic stop when the individual crashed into another vehicle and fled the scene. DHS said two additional individuals intervened and attacked the agent with a snow shovel and a broom handle.

“This attack on another brave member of law enforcement took place while Minnesota’s top leaders, Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, are actively encouraging an organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement officers,” the DHS statement said.

DHS stated the agent fired a shot into one individual’s leg in self-defense. Both the injured individual and the officer were transported to the hospital.

Officials said they are continuing to confirm details and provide updates through the social media platform X.

Local media outlet KARE 11 reported that federal law enforcement officers remained on scene.

The incident comes amid criticism from Governor Tim Walz regarding the Trump administration’s actions in Minneapolis.

“They’re pulling over people indiscriminately, including U.S. citizens, and demanding to see their papers,” Walz said. He accused the Trump administration of carrying out a “campaign of organized brutality” and criticized the federal response following the death of Renee Nicole Good, saying, “Instead of conducting an impartial investigation… the Trump administration is devoting the full power of the federal government to finding an excuse to attack the victim and her family.”
