Authorities in Colima, western Mexico, say three suspects were killed after two relatives of Mario Delgado, Mexico’s Secretary of Public Education, were shot dead in their home on Saturday morning.
Delgado confirmed the victims were his aunt, Eugenia Delgado, and his cousin, Sheila Amezcua Delgado. The attack occurred around 4:30 a.m. in their residence. Officials have not disclosed a motive for the killings.
Police tracked the suspects’ vehicle to a home later that afternoon. During a gunfight, three individuals believed to be involved were killed, and authorities recovered weapons and clothing linked to the double shooting.
Delgado shared his grief on social media, describing the murders as “brutally committed.” He recalled fond memories of his aunt, who used to make his birthday cakes and earned her living selling food and pastries, and expressed hope that justice will be served.
Colima is one of Mexico’s most violent states, recording the country’s highest homicide rates in 2023 and 2024. Authorities are continuing their investigation and have not indicated whether additional suspects are being pursued.
