Crashes Shut Down I-79 South in Kanawha County

A stretch of Interstate 79 South was closed Monday evening in Kanawha County following multiple crashes, emergency officials said.

The shutdown occurred near the 16-mile marker in Clendenin, according to a Metro 911 alert.

Dispatchers reported that an SUV rolled over shortly after 5 p.m., followed by a secondary crash involving a tractor-trailer. The trailer, which was hauling steel coils, had its front wall torn off during the collision, according to crews at the scene.

First responders said a man was taken to a hospital with injuries, though his condition was not immediately available.

Troopers with the West Virginia State Police and deputies from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Officials did not provide an estimate for when the interstate would reopen.
