SOUTH FLORIDA — A man recently released from federal immigration custody is raising concerns about conditions inside a controversial detention center known as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
Maikel Rojas, 45, says he spent nearly five months in custody after being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in October 2025.
Detained After Routine Check-In
Rojas said he was taken into custody after attending a scheduled annual check-in at an immigration office in Miramar — a requirement following a past conviction.
Instead of returning home, he was transferred to a remote detention facility, where he remained until his release in March.
Allegations of Harsh Conditions
After returning home, Rojas described what he called difficult and inhumane conditions inside the facility.
Among his claims:
- Overcrowded living spaces with limited restroom access
- Lack of privacy, including cameras near toilet areas
- Restricted contact with family members
- Limited or no access to legal representation
- Poor food quality, including meals he alleges were spoiled
Rojas also said he lost significant weight during his time in detention.
Family Reunited After Months Apart
His wife, Roxana Torres, said she learned of his release through a phone call and rushed to the Krome Detention Center, where the couple reunited.
Torres had been actively protesting outside the facility with other families of detainees.
Legal Filing Led to Release
According to Torres, Rojas’ release came after filing a habeas corpus petition — a legal action that challenges the legality of detention.
The petition prompted a review of his case, ultimately leading to his release from custody.
Background and Ongoing Legal Status
Rojas immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 2004. He later served a prison sentence after being convicted as an accessory to murder and was required to report regularly to immigration authorities after his release.
Although he is now home, his legal situation remains unresolved. He is currently under monitoring and must attend upcoming immigration hearings.

Federal officials have acknowledged inquiries about the case but have not yet provided a detailed response to the allegations.

While relieved to be reunited, Rojas and his family say they remain uncertain about what lies ahead as his legal case continues.
