A deputy with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is under investigation after being seen using what appeared to be a dating app during an active SWAT operation in Riverside County.
Deputy’s Conduct Raises Concerns During Active Standoff
The incident occurred Wednesday during a tense, hours-long standoff near Jurupa Valley High School. Authorities were responding to an armed suspect who had crashed into a wall following a police pursuit.
Aerial footage captured by CBS Los Angeles showed a deputy taking cover behind an armored vehicle while scrolling on a mobile phone. The activity appeared inconsistent with standard protocol during high-risk law enforcement operations.
Sheriff’s Office Launches Internal Investigation
In response, the sheriff’s office issued a statement confirming an internal investigation into the deputy’s actions.
“This behavior does not reflect the standards, expectations, or policies of our department,” officials said, adding that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken based on the findings.
Details of the SWAT Operation and Suspect’s Death
The standoff began after the suspect led deputies on a prolonged pursuit before crashing near the school. During the confrontation, the individual remained inside the vehicle and communicated with a 911 dispatcher while refusing to surrender.
Law enforcement deployed non-lethal tactics, including pepper balls and robotic equipment, in an effort to resolve the situation.
After several hours, deputies approached the vehicle and discovered the suspect had suffered injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Paramedics from the Riverside County Fire Department pronounced the individual dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity.
