Flint mother convicted after leaving toddler on porch in cold weather

FLINT, Mich. – A Flint woman has been convicted of child abandonment after leaving her 2-year-old son on a stranger’s front porch on a cold evening in December 2023.

Mytekeya Ambershana Johnson, 23, was found guilty by a jury of one count of child abandonment, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison. The conviction was announced March 5 by the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police were called to Verdun Street around 8 p.m. on Dec. 9, 2023, after a report that a child had been left outside. Authorities said the temperature was about 35 degrees at the time.

According to testimony, Johnson drove into a driveway and left her son on the porch of a woman who was dating the child’s father before driving away. After she left, the child reportedly walked into the street following the vehicle.

The woman who witnessed the incident brought the child inside and contacted the child’s father before calling police.

An officer responded to the scene and took the child to Hurley Medical Center. Child Protective Services was also notified.
