Police are investigating widespread vehicle vandalism in East Hyde Park after about 30 cars were damaged early Saturday morning, leaving residents upset and calling for more security measures.
Authorities said the damage occurred around 4 a.m. when three suspects, traveling in a gray sedan, targeted vehicles in the 1700 block of East 56th Street and the 5500 block of South Shore Drive. Many cars were left with shattered windows.
Residents reported hearing car alarms and glass breaking during the incident. Several people who park near the Flamingo Apartments said the lot, which is open to the public, has been a repeated target.
Some neighbors said similar incidents happened just weeks earlier, with multiple vehicles damaged at that time as well. Frustration is growing among residents who feel the area lacks adequate surveillance and protection.
Tenants say they have raised concerns with the property manager and spoken with police about adding more cameras or improving the use of existing footage. Many expressed concerns about safety and said the ongoing vandalism is making them consider moving.
Police continue to investigate.
