Wayne County officials are getting ready for a systemwide residential flushing of the local water system after the latest lab tests again showed no detection of mineral oil in either the water plant or the distribution system. The testing follows an act of vandalism at an Appalachian Power substation that led to the release of transformer oil.
The West Virginia Department of Health said Monday evening that samples taken on January 30, 2026, continued to show no mineral oil. However, the do not consume order remains in effect.
Town officials issued the order on January 16, three days after a transformer at Appalachian Power’s East Lynn substation was vandalized, causing the oil spill.
Officials said the systemwide flushing could begin as early as Tuesday and stressed that residents should wait for official instructions from the town before starting any flushing.
