A homicide suspect wanted for a deadly shooting in Camarillo died by a self-inflicted gunshot on the 405 Freeway near Los Angeles International Airport after a high-speed chase on Saturday, authorities said.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office reported that Camarillo police responded to a shooting on the 400 block of Walker Avenue around 11:45 a.m., finding a man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has not yet been publicly identified.
Officers located the suspect’s vehicle, a red Chevrolet Trailblazer with Nevada plates, and attempted to stop him, but the suspect fled at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The California Highway Patrol assisted in the pursuit, and Hertz provided GPS tracking of the vehicle, remotely disabling it near Imperial Highway and S. Inglewood Ave to prevent further escape.
The suspect eventually stopped, and during a standoff lasting nearly 40 minutes, took his own life inside the vehicle.
Investigators noted a second shooting occurred on the Imperial Highway offramp, prompting a temporary closure while police surveyed the area. Witness Valerie Leahy said the victim was shot while washing his car and that a bullet entered her home.
Authorities continue to investigate and urge anyone with information to contact the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office at 805-654-9511.
