A Scioto County man is accused of firing gunshots in the middle of a roadway while under the influence of drugs, deputies said.
Kyle D. Mays, 22, of McDermott, Ohio, faces charges of having weapons while under disability, discharging a firearm near a prohibited area and two counts of improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation following a Sunday morning incident, according to a news release from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they responded to Pollock Road around 6 a.m. Sunday after a concerned caller reported that Mays was standing in the street firing a gun.
When deputies arrived, they found that a neighbor had already taken the firearm from Mays and brought him inside a home in an effort to calm him down.
Mays told investigators he had shot someone attempting to break into his home, but authorities found no evidence that anyone had been on his property or had been shot, the release said.
Investigators later determined the claims were unfounded and concluded that Mays was under the influence of drugs, according to the news release.
Mays is being held on a $70,000 bond and was scheduled to appear Monday in Portsmouth Municipal Court.
