Man Convicted of Killing Elderly Roommate in East Bakersfield

A Kern County jury has found a man guilty of murdering his elderly roommate in a brutal attack at a room-and-board facility in east Bakersfield.

The Kern County District Attorney’s Office said Jason Aguilar Garibay was convicted on January 28, 2026, of first-degree murder, elder abuse, and causing great bodily injury to a person over 70 years old. He faces a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors said the killing occurred in the early morning hours of June 2, 2025, at a residence in the 400 block of South Williams Street. Garibay confronted 74-year-old Domingo Trevino, then kicked and stomped on his head more than 20 times while the victim was on the ground.

Authorities said Garibay briefly stopped the assault to summon another tenant to witness his behavior, then returned and continued the attack. Trevino died at the scene from severe head and neck injuries. Investigators described extensive blood at the scene and structural damage caused by the force of the assault.

Garibay was taken into custody when officers arrived and later admitted to the killing, telling investigators he intended to kill Trevino and felt no remorse, according to the district attorney’s office.

Garibay is scheduled to be sentenced on February 27, 2026.
