Man fatally shot by Fort Lauderdale officers after responding to disturbance call

A man was shot and killed by police in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday after officers responded to a reported disturbance, authorities said.

According to Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the agency is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Police Chief Bill Schultz said officers were dispatched around 12:30 p.m. to Chateau Park Drive near Northwest 9th Avenue. When they arrived, a man approached them and began firing a weapon.

Three officers returned fire, striking the suspect. Officers then provided life-saving measures until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported the man to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Schultz said the man who was killed was not connected to the original disturbance call. Details about the initial report remain unclear.

The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with department policy, pending an internal review.
