Jason Banegas, who previously confessed to killing a Hollywood police officer Yandy Chirino in 2021, is now asking to change his plea to “not guilty.”
Court documents filed last week indicate that Banegas claims he felt pressured into pleading guilty. He alleges his former attorneys told him that rejecting a plea deal could result in the state of Florida targeting his family for deportation.
Banegas was facing a life sentence for the 2021 shooting. A judge will now decide whether to grant the plea change, which could result in a new trial.
