Mexican authorities seize 14 million fentanyl doses in raid on secret drug lab

Authorities in Mexico say they have confiscated millions of doses of fentanyl after uncovering a clandestine drug laboratory and storage site in the country’s west.

The operation took place in the municipality of Villa de Álvarez, Colima, Mexico, where security forces raided a hidden lab and nearby warehouse, according to the Mexican Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection.

Officials reported finding around 270 kilograms of a substance believed to be fentanyl, both in powder and pill form. Authorities estimated the seizure to be equivalent to about 14 million doses of the powerful synthetic opioid.

Six people were arrested during the operation, though officials did not provide further details about the suspects or the estimated street value of the drugs.

Part of broader crackdown

The seizure is one of the latest in Mexico’s ongoing effort to curb drug production and trafficking, particularly of fentanyl, which has fueled a deadly overdose crisis in the United States.

While the haul was significant, officials noted it was not the largest fentanyl seizure on record, pointing to a larger operation in 2024 that recovered even more of the drug.

Political tensions over drug trafficking

The announcement comes as Donald Trump has sharply criticized Mexico’s efforts to combat drug cartels. During a meeting with conservative leaders in Florida, United States, he said criminal organizations were exerting major influence in Mexico and vowed to eliminate them.

In contrast, Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has argued that the flow of firearms from the United States contributes to cartel violence and has urged U.S. authorities to strengthen efforts to stop weapons from crossing the border into Mexico.

Ongoing operations against drug labs

Mexican authorities frequently dismantle clandestine drug laboratories across the country. In recent weeks, naval forces uncovered another hidden lab in Durango, Mexico containing large quantities of methamphetamine.

Additional raids earlier this year also targeted drug production sites in Sinaloa, Mexico and Michoacán, Mexico, where officials seized drugs, chemical precursors and laboratory equipment.

The crackdown follows recent violence tied to cartel operations, including a military action in Jalisco, Mexico that resulted in the death of cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho.”
