More than 500 miners to lose jobs as West Virginia operations idle

A coal operator announced plans to idle more than six mining operations in West Virginia and permanently lay off over 500 employees.

Greenbrier Minerals LLC filed a WARN notice Friday confirming that 530 workers will be laid off starting April 14. The notice states the job cuts are permanent.

The affected sites include mines and preparation plants in Logan and Wyoming counties:

  • Toney Fork Surface Mine in Lorado
  • Elk Lick Loadout in Lorado
  • Powellton No. 1 Mine in Lorado
  • Saunders Prep Plant in Lorado
  • Lower War Eagle No. 1 Mine in Cyclone
  • Muddy Bridge Mine in Davin
  • Eagle No. 1 Mine in Lorado

The notice also covers employees at the company’s administrative offices in Lyburn.

Greenbrier Minerals, which operates under Coronado Global Resources, cited “adverse market conditions” as the reason for the layoffs.

The announcement follows another WARN notice issued just over two weeks ago affecting approximately 200 workers at Mettiki Coal’s Mountain View Mine in Tucker County, where layoffs are set to begin April 1 as the mine shuts down.

The job cuts were revealed one day after Donald Trump unveiled new policies and plans to invest millions of dollars in three coal-fired power plants in West Virginia to keep them operational.
