Police warn of rising “bank jugging” thefts targeting ATM users in Los Angeles County

Authorities in Los Angeles County are alerting residents about a growing crime trend known as “bank jugging,” in which thieves target people shortly after they withdraw cash from banks or ATMs.

The warning was issued by the Bell Police Department, which said recent reports show suspects closely monitoring customers who withdraw money before following them from the bank.

How the crime happens

According to police, suspects often work in groups and may use distraction tactics to steal cash.

In some recent cases, criminals allegedly deflated or punctured victims’ tires, forcing drivers to stop their vehicles. Once the driver pulls over, the suspects take advantage of the distraction and steal money left inside the car.

Investigators say offenders frequently observe people leaving bank parking lots after withdrawing cash and then follow them to another location where the theft takes place.

Safety tips from police

Officials shared several recommendations to help residents reduce the risk of becoming victims:

  • Stay alert when leaving a bank or ATM

  • Avoid withdrawing large amounts of cash when alone

  • Watch for vehicles or individuals who appear to be following you

  • If a tire suddenly goes flat, try to drive to a busy or well-populated area before stopping

  • Keep cash and valuables with you instead of leaving them inside your vehicle

Police also warned residents to be cautious if strangers approach and offer help during such situations.

In some cases, one suspect may attempt to assist the driver while another person secretly steals belongings from the vehicle, authorities said.

Stay cautious and report suspicious activity

Officials urge residents to remain vigilant after visiting banks or ATMs and to contact authorities if they notice suspicious behavior.

Law enforcement says awareness is the best defense against bank jugging, which has been reported in several areas across the region.
