Six people were taken to the hospital Saturday after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Lexington, according to officials.
The Lexington Fire Department responded to the blaze at the Stone Bridge Apartments on Village Drive shortly after 4 p.m. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building, officials said.
Four adults and two children were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns.
Authorities said the fire started in a second-floor unit and spread to neighboring apartments, affecting 12 units in total. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze but continued working to extinguish hot spots.
Residents were evacuated, though the exact number of displaced individuals has not been confirmed.
One resident said he only realized there was a fire after someone began banging on windows and shouting warnings. He said he evacuated as quickly as possible and expressed uncertainty about when he might be able to return home.
Fire officials said they do not anticipate long-term displacement for residents in units surrounding where the fire began, but no timeline has been provided. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The American Red Cross has been called in to assist displaced residents. The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government is also offering support, including short-term housing and recovery resources through its non-emergency assistance line.
