Shoppers at Westfield Fashion Square were briefly ordered to shelter in place Wednesday evening after a smash-and-grab robbery inside a Macy’s store, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Robbery Initially Mistaken for Shooting
The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. at the shopping center on Riverside Drive. Police initially responded to reports of a possible shooting, but quickly determined the situation involved a robbery instead.
Suspects Used Sledgehammers
Authorities said three masked suspects entered the Macy’s store armed with sledgehammers. They smashed multiple display cases and stole high-value items, including watches and jewelry.
The suspects—described as wearing masks, dark clothing, and jeans—fled the scene in a white Lexus heading eastbound on Riverside Drive.
Safety Measures and Aftermath
As a precaution, officials issued a temporary shelter-in-place order for shoppers inside the mall. The restriction was lifted by around 8 p.m. once police secured the area.
No injuries were reported during the incident, and investigators have not yet determined the total value of the stolen merchandise.
Investigation Ongoing
Police are continuing to search for the suspects, and no arrests have been made so far. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
