Two people are fighting for their lives after a small plane went down in a drainage canal near a Camarillo neighborhood Sunday evening.
According to the Ventura County Fire Department, the crash happened around 6:15 p.m. near Carmen Drive and Coe Street. Fire crews responded to reports that a fixed-wing, single-engine Cessna 210B had crashed into the canal area for reasons that are still unknown.
Both people onboard had to be extricated from the wreckage before being rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition with severe injuries, firefighters said.
Officials confirmed the plane did not strike any nearby homes or buildings. Video from the scene showed part of the aircraft — including a wing — lodged high up in a tree close to where the plane came down.
No other injuries were reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will investigate what led to the crash.
