Coworkers rally to support girl after mother killed in Ventura County crash

Coworkers of a Southern California woman killed in a crash are rallying to support her injured daughter as she recovers from the traumatic accident.

Authorities say 42-year-old Anabel Zamora died in a head-on collision Feb. 28 on State Route 23 near Los Angeles Avenue in  Ventura County. According to the California Highway Patrol, a pickup truck driver crossed the center median while trying to pass traffic and struck Zamora’s vehicle.

The crash also killed a passenger in the pickup truck and injured Zamora’s sister. Zamora’s 10-year-old daughter, Caroline, was seriously hurt and taken to the hospital.

Family friends say the child suffered broken ribs and lost her spleen as well as parts of her pancreas and large intestine. She also witnessed the crash and repeatedly asked for her mother afterward.

Zamora’s coworkers said she had worked for the company for more than a decade while raising her daughter and was known for supporting colleagues both on and off the job.

Following her death, flowers and photos of Zamora and her daughter now cover her desk at work. Coworkers have also launched a crowdfunding campaign to help Caroline as she recovers and faces life without her mother.

Investigators say charges are pending against the pickup truck driver, who suffered moderate injuries. Authorities said impairment does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.
