CSU Bakersfield closed its campus Monday after an anonymous threat was reported, according to the university’s website. Officials later announced the campus will reopen and classes will resume on Tuesday, February 3, during regular hours.
CSUB officials said there was no active threat.
A university official said that around 2:45 p.m. on February 2, 2026, they received an anonymous phone call from someone claiming to have a gun and threatening to shoot people on campus before blowing themselves up.
The campus was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Students and staff initially sheltered in place before later evacuating.
Bakersfield Police Department officers and University Police blocked all campus entrances, with Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies also responding to assist.
Officials confirmed that as of 3:30 p.m., there was no active shooter on campus.
The CSUB website stated that all classes were cancelled effective immediately.
Bakersfield College’s Southwest Campus was also placed on lockdown, though officials emphasized the measure applied only to the BC Southwest Campus.
All BC Southwest Campus classes scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. or later were cancelled for Monday.
According to the CSUB website, evacuations were underway, and the campus remained closed for the rest of the day and evening.
