Police: Driver hits two pedestrians, stabs third in north suburban attack

A woman is in custody after police said she drove into two pedestrians and stabbed a third person in a violent incident in the north suburbs Monday morning.

The Gurnee Police Department said officers responded just after 10 a.m. to the 600 block of Grand Avenue following reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

Investigators said the woman drove through a parking lot aisle and struck a 79-year-old man who was standing beside his vehicle. She then hit a nearby 60-year-old woman.

The man suffered serious injuries and was taken to Advocate Condell Hospital. The woman was transported to Lake Forest Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said the driver fled the scene before officers arrived. While canvassing the area, officers later observed a physical altercation between a man and a woman near the 6400 block of Grand Avenue.

Officers ordered the two to separate, but police said the woman stood up and aggressively moved toward an officer, prompting the use of a Taser.

The woman, identified as a 25-year-old from Waukesha, Wisconsin, was taken into custody. Police later confirmed she was the driver involved in the earlier crash.

Investigators said after leaving the initial scene, the woman went to another nearby parking lot, where she used a large butcher knife to strike a vehicle window and slash the driver’s side tire. When the man inside the vehicle exited, a struggle ensued.

The man suffered multiple cuts to his hands. Police said he was unable to disarm the woman but managed to keep her at the scene until officers arrived.

Authorities believe the woman randomly targeted all three victims. The investigation is ongoing.
