Kentucky Man Shot by Police in Johnson County, Condition Stable

A man from Salyersville is recovering after being shot by police officers during an early morning incident in Johnson County, according to Kentucky State Police.

Authorities confirmed the man is in stable condition following the officer-involved shooting.

Incident Began During Stolen Motorcycle Investigation

The situation unfolded around 2 a.m. Sunday when a Paintsville Police Department officer was patrolling along Main Street in Paintsville.

During the patrol, the officer reportedly located a parked motorcycle that matched the description of a stolen vehicle. While investigating, the officer encountered 37-year-old Shawn Gayheart.

Foot Chase and Struggle Lead to Use of Force

Police say Gayheart fled the scene, prompting a pursuit. A physical altercation followed between the suspect and the officer. Shortly after, a second officer arrived to assist.

Authorities stated that both officers attempted to subdue Gayheart using Tasers, but the attempts were unsuccessful. During the confrontation, both officers discharged their firearms, striking Gayheart.

Medical Aid Provided at Scene

Following the shooting, officers rendered immediate medical assistance until emergency responders arrived. Gayheart was then transported to Pikeville Medical Center, where he was reported to be in stable condition later that day.

Weapons Recovered, Investigation Ongoing

Investigators said a knife and a firearm were recovered at the scene. However, officials have not confirmed whether Gayheart remains a suspect in the reported motorcycle theft.

The Kentucky State Police is leading the investigation, which is standard procedure in all officer-involved shootings across the state.

Authorities have not released the names of the officers involved, and no additional details have been made public at this time.
