Kern County to Open Temporary Tehachapi Transfer Station as Landfill Nears Capacity

Kern County Public Works will open a temporary Tehachapi Transfer Station starting Feb. 9, 2026, to meet residential and commercial solid waste needs as the Tehachapi Sanitary Landfill approaches capacity, officials said.

Because of operational limits at the temporary site, some waste materials and load types will be diverted to the Bena Landfill or the Mojave-Rosamond Landfill.

Officials said the Solid Waste division is currently designing a permanent transfer station for the Tehachapi area, which is expected to open in 2028. While customers may experience longer wait times during the transition, no additional fees will be charged, and existing gate fees will remain the same. Monthly Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events will also continue at the temporary site.

The temporary Tehachapi Transfer Station will operate at the same location as the current landfill at 12001 East Tehachapi Boulevard. The landfill site has been in operation since 1973.

Hours of operation:

  • Monday–Saturday: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Sunday: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
