LONG BEACH, Calif. — A police officer is expected to recover after being stabbed multiple times during a violent encounter Friday afternoon, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 2:42 p.m. in the 200 block of West Broadway, where officers with the Long Beach Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance involving a potentially armed individual.
Suspect Allegedly Attacks Officer With Knife
According to police, officers located the suspect and attempted to de-escalate the situation. During the encounter, force was used, and the man allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed one officer multiple times.
Despite the severity of the attack, the injured officer was transported to a hospital, treated, and later released. Officials say the officer is expected to make a full recovery.
Federal Agents Help Subdue Suspect
Four federal air marshals with the Department of Homeland Security were nearby on a separate assignment and witnessed the incident.
They quickly intervened, assisting local officers in restraining and arresting the suspect without further violence.
Suspect Identified, Faces Serious Charges
Authorities identified the suspect as Arturo Fernandez, 44, of Torrance.
He was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of attempted murder. Bail has been set at $1 million.
Knife Recovered, Prior Altercation Suspected
Investigators recovered a knife at the scene and believe the suspect may have been involved in an earlier fight before police arrived.
Police Chief Praises Response
Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish commended the officers and federal agents for their swift response.
“The violent actions of this individual highlight the dangers officers face every day,” Hebeish said, adding that he was grateful the injured officer is expected to recover.
