REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands Unified School District has announced enhanced campus security measures following a troubling incident in which a middle school student was discovered carrying a loaded firearm on school grounds.
The incident occurred in March at Moore Middle School and has since raised serious concerns among parents and the local community about student safety.
Immediate Action Following Gun Incident
District officials confirmed that the situation prompted swift action, including an emergency meeting with parents to address concerns and outline safety improvements.
According to district spokesperson Christine Stephens, the administration recognized the urgency of the issue and moved quickly to implement changes.
“We understand that safety is a top priority for families, and we are committed to strengthening protections for our students,” Stephens said.
New Security Measures Across Campuses
In response to the incident, the district is rolling out several upgraded safety protocols, including:
- Restricting campus access to a single entry point for students
- Installing additional surveillance cameras
- Increasing perimeter fencing
- Conducting more frequent randomized police K-9 searches
These steps are aimed at preventing similar incidents and improving overall campus security.
Parents React to Safety Enhancements
Parents say the changes provide some reassurance, though concerns remain about student safety.
Rudy Gutierrez, a parent of two students in the district, said the new measures help ease anxiety.
“It’s comforting to know the district is taking extra steps to keep kids safe,” he said, adding that parents rely heavily on schools to ensure student well-being during the day.
Police Hold Parents Accountable
The Redlands Police Department confirmed that the parents of the student involved were cited and released. Authorities noted that cases like this often involve improper firearm storage, which can allow minors to gain access to weapons.
Officials emphasized that preventing such incidents requires shared responsibility between families, schools, and law enforcement.
Ongoing Focus on School Safety
District leaders say they will continue to evaluate and strengthen security measures as needed, stressing that maintaining a safe learning environment remains their top priority.
