A deputy in Southern California is under investigation after being seen using what appeared to be a dating app during an active SWAT operation in Riverside County.
Deputy’s Conduct Raises Concerns
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it has launched an internal investigation following the incident, which was captured on aerial footage.
In a statement, the department said the behavior “does not reflect the standards, expectations, or policies” of the agency and emphasized its commitment to accountability.
Incident Occurred During Armed Standoff
The situation unfolded during a prolonged standoff involving an armed suspect near Jurupa Valley High School.
Video footage showed the deputy taking cover behind an armored vehicle while appearing to scroll through a mobile app during the tense situation.
Pursuit and Crash Led to Standoff
Authorities said the standoff began after the suspect led deputies on a stop-and-start pursuit. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a wall after deputies attempted to deploy a Grappler device designed to stop fleeing vehicles.
The suspect reportedly remained inside the car and refused to surrender, even as deputies used tools such as pepper balls and robotic equipment to try to resolve the situation.
Suspect Found Dead at Scene
After several hours, deputies approached the vehicle and found the suspect unresponsive. Officials said the man had injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Paramedics from the Riverside County Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are continuing to review both the deputy’s conduct and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
The incident has raised questions about professionalism and conduct during high-risk law enforcement operations.
