Strong Santa Ana winds expected across Southern California this weekend

A strong Santa Ana wind event is expected to impact much of Southern California through the weekend, bringing powerful gusts, warm temperatures and the potential for hazardous conditions.

Meteorologists say winds began developing Friday and are expected to peak Saturday morning. The event has prompted a Next Weather Alert across the region through Sunday.

According to the  National Weather Service, gusts in the San Gabriel Mountains could reach between 60 and 65 mph.

A  high wind warning  will remain in effect until 3 p.m. Saturday for several areas, including the Santa Susana Mountains, the Highway 14 Corridor, Mount Baldy and Wrightwood.

Officials warn the strong winds could cause power outages, knock down trees and create dangerous driving conditions. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and avoid traveling during peak wind periods if possible.

A wind advisory is also in effect for much of Southern California, where northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

Despite the windy conditions, temperatures across the region are forecast to remain warm, with daytime highs reaching the 80s.
