8 Suspects, All Under 24, Arrested After Jewelry Store Heist and Pair of Crashes

Eight suspects, all younger than 24, were taken into custody following a jewelry store burglary that ended with two separate crashes in Anaheim and Fullerton, according to police.

The incident began around 2:30 p.m. Friday when Anaheim police responded to a commercial burglary at Classic Jewelers on East Santa Ana Canyon Road, authorities said in a media release issued Saturday morning.

“Employees reported that multiple suspects deliberately rammed a dark-colored Nissan Rogue into the front of the business to force entry and steal jewelry,” Anaheim police said. “During the burglary, the suspects also took a firearm from behind the counter that belonged to the business.”

Police said the suspects fled the scene in two Dodge Charger sedans. Investigators later determined the Nissan Rogue used to ram the storefront had been stolen and was left behind.

Shortly afterward, an Anaheim police officer spotted a vehicle matching the description of one suspect vehicle near East Street and the 91 Freeway. The officer followed the car as it exited at Lemon Street and continued north.

“At that time, the officer did not attempt a traffic stop, and no police pursuit was underway,” Anaheim police said. “As the vehicle approached Orangethorpe Avenue, it became involved in a multi-vehicle collision.”

All four occupants — the driver and three passengers — ran from the crash scene but were later located and arrested, police confirmed.

Meanwhile, an Anaheim Police Department helicopter located what investigators believed was the second suspect vehicle near Harbor and Brea boulevards in Fullerton. That vehicle was also involved in a multi-car crash at the intersection of Euclid Street and Malvern Avenue. As with the earlier crash, police said no officers were actively pursuing the vehicle when the collision occurred; officers arrived as the crash happened.

Immediately following the Euclid and Malvern crash, two men believed to be involved in the burglary were arrested, and a handgun was recovered at the scene. Police said two additional suspects were arrested hours later in the backyards of separate residences.

“Detectives are working to determine whether the firearm and jewelry recovered are the same items taken during the burglary,” authorities said.

Anaheim police identified the eight suspects as:

  • Jose Andres Martinez-Colindres, 24, of Inglewood

  • Leontrey Gipson, 23, of Los Angeles

  • Deondre Jones, 23, of Los Angeles

  • Tylaind Brown, 20, of Compton

  • Khilen Toles, 20, of Inglewood

  • Khamari Toles, 20, of Inglewood

  • Latrell Mathews, 19, of Los Angeles

  • An unnamed 17-year-old male from Los Angeles

Police said the seven adult suspects were arrested and booked on suspicion of multiple felony charges pending review by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. The juvenile suspect was released to a guardian while further proceedings are pending.

The owner of Classic Jewelers, Ramzy Tabello, told KTLA the suspects made off with roughly $1 million worth of gold and jewelry, along with his firearm.

“They started smashing my showcases… they ran to me and grabbed my gun,” Tabello said. “My life flashed before my eyes.”

Several drivers not connected to the crime were hospitalized following the two crashes, though officials said their injuries were not life-threatening.
