Peanut butter recall affecting 40 states labeled ‘Class II’ by FDA

A recall involving single-serve peanut butter containers distributed to 40 states, including California, has been classified as a “Class II” recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

According to the FDA, a Class II recall applies to products that may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, with the likelihood of serious health consequences considered remote.

The recall was initially launched in April 2025 by Ventura Foods LLC. The company cited possible contamination with a foreign material after discovering pieces of blue plastic in a production filter, the FDA said in its enforcement report announcing the classification.

The affected items were sold in several single-serve sizes under various brand names, including Flavor Fresh Peanut Butter, House Recipe Creamy Peanut Butter and Katy’s Kitchen Smooth Peanut Butter. Some of the recalled peanut butter was also included in single-serve peanut butter and jelly packs.

In total, more than 23,000 single-serve packages containing the recalled peanut butter were impacted.

The FDA report indicates the products were distributed through multiple distributors, including Sysco and Dyma Brands, to 40 states across the country.

A spokesperson for Ventura Foods said the peanut butter products were not sold directly to consumers in retail stores. Instead, they were supplied to restaurants or retailers to be provided as complimentary condiments.

In a company statement, Ventura Foods said it acted quickly after initiating the voluntary recall on April 30, 2025, urging customers and distributors to review inventory and remove any affected products from circulation.

“Protecting consumers remains our top priority, and we will continue to act swiftly and transparently as the FDA review progresses,” the company said.
